Finding a Barge in France
Finding a barge in France I was extremely impressed by the thoroughness of Mr. Gerard Duursma, my personally appointed surveyor. Both I and the ships owner watched anxiously as he carefully cleaned back a vast number of tiny areas of steel before testing each spots thickness and by doing so build up a picture of the overall condition of Vitesse's hull. Considering that the hull was constructed in 1922, some corrosion over 84 years was I suppose inevitable, but given all that time, sitting in water, and knowing how quickly the little rust monsters attack my Ford, I was amazed at just how little plating had ever needed to be done down there. Another important thing to know is that deficiencies found in the hull, superstructure or mechanics, have to be put right and paid for by the current owner BEFORE the handover of the ship can be completed. The chalk marks indicate a few of the places where over plating would be required.
