The Barge's bronze propellerThe sharing of costs by friends old and new makes Nilaya’s continued exploration of the beautiful canals of France, Belgium and Europe possible. Running an 89-year-old steel barge requires a not inconsiderable amount of money. 

Nilaya demands constant day-to-day maintenance and provision toward four yearly safety surveys, hull cleaning and painting (which requires lifting the barge from the water) together with barge being gently winched out of the water the insurance, equipment, (ropes, fenders etc.) waterway licenses, expensive 'white' road diesel, food, drinks, mooring, water and electricity fees, that make cruising European waterways possible.
